Feedback Problem for Portofino

My fire alarm has started chirping. The last time it went off for no good reason a couple of months ago, I climbed up and felt around until I made it stop before going to the 7-Eleven to ask for another battery. (Am I right that it needs a 9 Volt battery? I have glaucoma so I go by touch when my eye pressure makes it impossible to see at all, but that is what it felt like to me.) However, my real question is whether it is criminal for me to try to the fire alarm. A guy at the 7-Eleven told me that tenants cannot legally mess around with the landlord's fire alarms and that fire marshals want that law. Oh, so sorry if it is true. I didn't know this.
