I can understand the fear and anger that some residents have about the shooting and their safety here at Schooner Cove. I have had 2 cars stolen here, but this was before the security company was hired if that would have made a difference. Nothing was done about it. Also, frequently there has been a rash of car thefts over the years. McKinley has always placed the prevention of this on the residents and no attempt of a solution by the company. A few years ago a resident at my apartment building frequently smoked "skunk " weed. The odor was so bad it came through the vents and filled the apartments. Even though the resident violated the lease and committed a crime McKinley was concerned more about breaking the offender's rights than honoring those of the compliant residents. Recently a resident from our building painted graffiti on our sidewalk, stairs, and landing. Although this wasn't a violent violation it was a crime and disrespectful of McKinley property and other residents. According to apartment quality statistics that I've found online Schooner Cove has one of the highest crime rates in the Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti area. Since I've lived here most managers have been very supportive and have tried to meet the residents' needs. Unfortunately, now they are rotated to different McKinley properties after only a few months being here. Continuity is lacking and that fosters distrust. This is also true for the maintenance department. For quite a while after I came here in 2006 the staff was consistent and the community morale was positive. The manager stayed here for years and was very proactive as well compassionate to resident needs. Also every maintenance employee was assigned to a group of buildings and trust was established. I had no problem letting him enter my apartment without me being here. This has changed. Although the rent increases yearly the quality of service and safety hasn't changed or has decreased. I agree with EveeDee that surveillance cameras need to be installed to monitor building entrances. I also think that the parking lots need surveillance as well due to the high rate of thefts. She also mentions the ineffectiveness of the hired security company. Often times they are not on the property and refer complaints to the sheriff's department. By the time they arrive the perpetrators may be gone. Even if security is here they may be at the other end of the property. All the theft and drug offenders need to do is wait for the company car to leave the area. Why can't the cost of having this ineffective solution be applied to hidden surveillance cameras that would not only record crimes but also prevent them in the long run? Don't get me wrong, I love my spacious apartment and the surrounding beauty of the lake and nature. I hope McKinley will also have a reputation for providing a safe environment and of having a consistent quality staff as well.

I wrongly commented on the August rent payment. I'm not that well versed on how to make new comments. I need to review the directions. My entry was suppose to be grouped with the other posts that were concerned about the safety of Schooner Cove.

Incident Update

Announcement for Schooner Cove

Dear Residents,

Some of you may have heard about the recent shooting incident that occurred at our neighbor and adjacent community, Acclaim at Ford Lake. Please know that we have reached out to the management company of Acclaim to offer any assistance or support they may need but I also wanted to take a moment to remind all of you (Schooner Cove residents) to remain vigilant and report any concerns you may observe.

As always, in the event you witness any loitering or suspicious behavior, please communicate it to the office and reach out to the local Sheriff department's non...

I'm incredibly disappointed in this response from Schooner Cove. One of our neighbors was murdered on Friday and many of us heard the gunshots and the sirens. Some of our community members were witnesses. There is nothing here acknowledging the very real trauma that many in our community are going through and nothing here that honors Andre Smith. You should have notified the community on Friday night, you should have shared the vigil that took place to honor the victim, and you should have used this opportunity to share the number for the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office confidential tip line (734-973-7711) since the suspects are still unidentified. This is not an issue of loitering; this was a murder, and your announcement downplays that in a very irresponsible way.

So what will McKinley be doing to keep us safe? To restore a sense of safety to the community? I know that shootings can happen anywhere so moving won’t help, but something needs to be done and addressed here. Just because the residents did not belong to schooner cove, doesn’t make this a schooner cove problem. A simple email isn’t going to cut it for a lot of us.

I work midnights and arrived home at 3:30, which is Wednesday morning now, to all of the entrances being blocked off by sheriff cars. They directed me to enter the main middle entrance but I would like to know, why are they out there? Did something else occur? This is starting to worry me and I’m starting to regret renewing my lease here.

This is my third year living at Schooner Cove. We have an issue with crime and Schooner Cove and McKinley properties doesn't care. From apartment break-ins, car thefts and break-ins, drug use in the parking lots to fights near the pool area, and nothing is being done. Our "security" drives by/around in their car maybe once a week on Saturday nights that I have witnessed. I approached McKinely Corporate and our leasing office last year after my car was involved in a hit and run (that my insurance wouldn't cover and the Sheriff told me they could do nothing about since we're on private property) about getting security cameras installed on the property and was just met with a "no." These things are a liability for McKinley and its residents, so you'd think they'd care. Sadly, I'm not at all surprised that something like this happened.

I strongly agree with the comments from swork1 about McKinley's terrible response to this tragedy as well as EveeDee's comments about McKinley's ongoing blatant disregard for community safety. I regret renewing my lease this summer and will absolutely never lease from a McKinley property again.

Hello Linda!

I tried sending an email but it kept saying address error. I would just like to bring to your attention that I had a very frustrating interaction with a leasing manager in the office. I entered the office, Monday, July 29th around 4pm to discuss the incident that occurred that previous Friday. The lady denied that an incident even occurred. She said "I don't know what you're talking about, there was no incident at Schooner Cove. I was very upset because I was actually very much a part of this tragic accident. I was using "schooner coves" dog park at the time of the shooting. I witnessed everything. I saw the gunman, I saw the shooting happen. I DID talk to police and help anyone that I could. I should be able to go into the leasing office and feel that my concerns and opinions matter. Instead they were completely disregarded. I instead when into the other leasing office and expressed my concerns. I simply wanted to know what the community would be implementing to make the community a safer place for everyone. I pay a lot to live here and I haven't had a very great experience this first year. You know with our previous conversations. Very bad experience with the leasing office. It's hard to feel a sense of community when the employees in the office are changing so frequently. I don't feel that there is someone I can regularly talk to about my experience in the community.
